Nickel Based Alloys

- Stainless Steel Materials And Processing

Super stainless steels such as duplex steel, super austenitic steel, tantalum-titanium-zirconium, nickel-based alloys, and other high-performance alloys are available in our current stock.

We stock a large variety of

corrosion-resistant & high-temperature alloys.

With long standing relationships with many of the largest producers and stocking distributors across the globe, we specialise in non-standard items and hard to find alloys and product forms.

Nickel based alloys are divided into two main sections.

High-temperature alloys are used by manufacturers of equipment that is subjected to extremely high temperatures, such as jet engines for the aerospace market, gas turbine engines used for power generation and waste incineration, and industrial heating equipment.

Corrosion-resistant alloys are used in applications that require resistance to very corrosive media found in applications, such as chemical processing, power plant emissions control, hazardous waste treatment, sour gas production and pharmaceutical vessels.

Superalloys, also referred to as heat-resistant alloys or high-temperature alloys, are classified into several groups, among which nickel-based and cobalt-based alloys represent the most important categories.

Nickel-based superalloys are specifically designed to maintain high creep strength, excellent oxidation resistance, and superior corrosion resistance at elevated service temperatures, typically up to 1100°C.

For hardfacing applications, our nickel-based superalloy cored wires are 100% compatible with open-die forging operations, including critical components such as shafts, presses, and hammers.

Metallurgical Principles Behind Superior Performance

The outstanding performance of nickel-based superalloys is mainly attributed to two key metallurgical mechanisms.

Firstly, alloying elements such as molybdenum, tungsten, cobalt, and chromium significantly strengthen the solid solution. These elements directly enhance the high-temperature strength of the welding deposit.

Secondly, elements such as titanium and aluminium contribute to an age-hardening effect by forming a face-centred cubic (FCC) structure. This structure enables precipitation strengthening, providing maximum mechanical performance under extreme service conditions.

What are Nickel Alloys used for?

High-performance nickel and cobalt based alloys are often used in high temperature and corrosion applications where strength and longevity is required.

Weldability and Crack Control

Multiple studies on nickel-based superalloys have demonstrated that these welding deposits can be challenging to process due to their tendency to crack during welding.

By precisely controlling the chemical composition of our cored wires—particularly the aluminium-to-titanium ratio— Welding Alloys helps customers remain within the safest metallurgical window, while consistently achieving the required hardfacing performance.
